Personal introduction:

4/17/24 - 14 day suspension for messages sent off-site and not part of an agora proceeding. Cancel culture has come to agora, leaving this craziness behind. Will be looking into localcoinswap and bisq, and also still facilitating offsite deals of course.

The messages in question were sent via DM to a person who is not an administrator nor moderator of agora. They were also deleted. The recipient went into archive and relayed the messages to agora staff who suspended us. Why would you trust your address and other sensitive personal details with a site who values privacy so little? After the Incognito incident I would hope everyone is PGPing info they wouldn't post publicly, because that's essentially what you're doing when you post on a site like this. Agora being compromised by LE is irrelevant if agora plays jury, judge and executioner themselves anyway, which is what they've elected to do in this instance. Do note that neither LE nor the KYC exchanges agora seeks to replace would have taken action or even cared about messages sent on another app.

I don't mean to sound hysterical - make no mistake; agora, for the time being, is probably safe. But this incident is symptomatic of a larger trend. We have had similar issues with site administration in the past which we assumed were isolated events. Crossing the line into policing offsite conduct has made it clear that they weren't. It boils down to what you stand to gain vs. what you stand to lose. If you are a seller cashing out, your margins are probably quite good. If you are a buyer, you probably don't even care about margins. We are traders. We profit only on the differences in buy and sell prices, not to mention the debited arbitration bond. We do not make enough per unit of time on unit of coin to justify leaving funds on the site, lest they hold a caucus on whether the things I tweeted at 13 years old are sufficiently corporate. If you are a vendor, whose mode of profit is on agora interactions themselves, I strongly encourage you follow suit.

P.S. Obviously agora is LE-compliant, so just in case this wasn't clear to anyone, no, the DMs in question were not illicit or duplicitous in any way.

P.P.S. This just occurred to me but a few months ago some money was stolen from us by a user who had funds locked in escrow with another vendor. When we brought evidence to agora, they refused to act because the theft had occurred off-site. Take from that what you will about where their priorities lie.

Feedback

  • easy breezy!

  • Avoid! he requested afterwards that paypal would charge a fee for "international transfers", but he didn't specified the amount. I cancelled for avoiding RIP OFF and gave a neutral rating. He revenged a "negative" without reason and insults me in the chat.
